Photographs
I’ve been playing around with WordPress quite a bit and I’ve decided to set up a separate subdomain for my photographs on KZBlog. Redbubble is a good place to buy and sell art–the quality of products I’ve bought there is really good, better than I could do myself. But the display of photos is not [...]

Halloween is Not a Kazakh Tradition
Zakon.kz is reporting that a member of Parliament has written a letter to the Prime Minister asking for a ban on Halloween [RU]. Kurmangali Uali wrote to Karim Massimov, the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan and to the Head of the KNB asking the government to actions to ban Halloween, citing the lack of roots in [...]

Zheti Ata
Another good post by a Peace Corps volunteer on Kazakh Family Trees. Summarizes a lot like how Kazakhs traditionally didn’t have surnames which means that most surnames are actually the name of an ancestor with the Russian ending for “son of” or “daughter of” tacked on. It’s also interesting to Search for Kazakhstan (NSFW) on redbubble. I seem to be the major contributor now but there are some great landscapes and also a few pictures of naked people bathing [...]

ITP Considers Renaming it the Andre Cup
Kazakhstan beat Switzerland 5-0 in the Davis Cup World Group playoffs this weekend, dropping only 2 sets in 5 matches. Andre Golubev was the star of the playoff, beating Marco Chiudinelli in 3 straight sets on Friday. Then he lead the doubles team with Yuri Schukin on Saturday to another straight sets victory over Yves [...]

Happy Ait!
For the end of Ramadan, a nice video by Lena Khan, a Muslim American director. She asked 2000 American Muslims what message they wanted to send to the world and this is the result. A beautiful and funny film/music video set to a wonderful song by Kareem Salama.

Fishy Language Policy
Apologies for the pun in the title. Couldn’t resist. Apparently a shop in Aktobe is being sued by a customer for being unable to explain a tin of fish in Kazakh. The language law says that all consumer information must be available in Kazakh. For those who don’t live here, all products made in Kazakhstan [...]
