Most taxi drivers and bus drivers in Almaty are from the South or refugee Karakalpaks. That explains it for me.

Yes, I think there is a difference between the outskirts populated by ex-countryside people, and the centre (for now) still dominated by Almaty-born people. But maybe they just get crazy outside the city center. And of course the traffic in Almaty is much worse than in Astana, so maybe that keeps people a bit more sane.

Interesting. I think here in Almaty drivers are very courteous (bar the bus drivers), even stopping for pedestrians! Pretty much agree on everything else, though....

A late reply, I know, but I think that the crazy driving style is limited to Astana and Shymkent. I haven't seen any sharp cheeses unfortunately. And I have never seen Kale or anything like it. Your best bet for that kind of stuff would be the bazaar where you might find someone getting small personal imports from China or whatever.

Dutch cheese — called Golandski Syr–is pretty close to generic Cheddar/ American cheese. Also if you know the name or Russian word for that kind of cheese that would help too!
Has anyone been able to find any specialty produce like Kale?
Thanks...

I am currently living in Kazakhstan and I am desperate to find some Cheddar or Sharp cheddar cheese- can you give an advice as to where I might find some?
